Action Update: Sudan Divestment
A Letter to Virginians from the Sudan Divestment Taskforce:
Dear all,
Earlier this month, United States Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and John Cornyn (R-TX) introduced federal legislation expressing the sense of Congress that states and other entities should be allowed to divest their assets of holdings in certain companies operating in Sudan. The legislation provides support for various states and institutions considering targeted divestment legislation as an expression of their opposition to the genocide and policies of the Khartoum government. The authorization, much like the targeted Sudan divestment model, would sunset in the event that the Government of Sudan alters its behavior and federal sanctions are lifted. Co-sponsors of Senator Durbin's bipartisan legislation include Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Senator Barack Obama (D-IL).
Even though the Virginia bill did not pass, but you can still help other states by advocating for this federal legislation which gives the state divestment campaign much needed support.
Action: Call your U.S. Senators John Warner and Jim Webb and ask that they co-sponsor Sudan Divestment Bill SB 831. MAKE THE CALL WITH OUR NEW HOTLINE: 1-800-GENOCIDE. The hotline gives you talking points and will connect you directly to your senator after you provide your zip code. It’s pretty sweet!
Thank you all!
Take care now,
