Sudan-Chad
Peace Initiatives
March 19, 2008
On Thursday, March 13, 2008 President Omar Al-Bashir
of Sudan and President Idriss Deby of Chad met in Dakar,
Senegal and signed a peace deal to stop the funding
of rebel forces along their shared border. The deal
aims to promote stability in the region by reducing
the amount of rebel attacks in both countries. In the
past, peace deals between the two countries have failed,
causing increased distrust. However, this pact includes
greater objectives and requires the two leaders to hold
monthly meetings. Additionally, many international figures
attended the signing of the peace deal. The international
presence adds further credibility to the pact and displays
how important peace in the Sudan-Chad region is to the
international community.
The Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy is pleased
that progress is occurring between the two countries.
However, Damanga remains uncertain about the implementation
of the agreement objectives since Sudan has disrespected
many international peace agreements in the past. As
a result of this pact, Damanga expects that the full
deployment of UNAMID will take place. Additionally,
Damanga hopes that this peace deal will provide additional
growth between the two countries and promote stability
and peace in the region.
