On June 28th 2008, in El-Arish, Egypt, Police opened fire on a group attempting to cross the Egypt-Israel border. An unidentified man was killed in the shooting as well as a 7-year old Sudanese girl; her mother was arrested and jailed. According to Police they resolved to shoot into the group after previously warning them to stop in their path. There have been 16 people killed while trying to cross the Egypt-Israel border this year.

Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy Condemns the killing of the seven-year-old girl and the unidentified man. The Egyptian police need to devise a better approach to protecting their borders and should be held accountable by their government and other nations to ensure that these barbaric actions do not continue. In addition to this, Israel should not overlook the plight of the Darfuri refugees who are seeking refuge within their borders.
