good news: ICC indicts omar al bashir
July 14, 2008
Today, Monday July 14, 2008, the Sudanese president Omar Al-Bashir was indicted by the ICC prosecutor, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, for war crimes and crimes against humanity. According to Mr. Moreno Ocampo’s report, Al-Bashir faces ten counts of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Despite the fact that an arrest warrant has been issued for President Omar Al-Bashir, Sudanese government officials say they are not willing to cooperate with the ICC. The ruling National Congress Party has warned that if Al-Bashir is indicted, there will be “more violence and blood.” Due to this warning, the UN has suspended non vital activities in Darfur and has also raised the alert level.
Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy is truly delighted by this milestone in stopping the genocide in Darfur. We thank Mr. Luis Moreno-Ocampo for remaining undeterred throughout the process, and we offer our sincere support for his campaign to bring the perpetrators of genocide to justice. We thank all the activist organizations and individuals who have been working to bring peace to Darfur; their efforts have not been in vain. We urge the International community, and the UN to openly support this initiative, to ensure that the hopes of those suffering will not be extinguished.
