New Attacks in Darfur
September 15, 2008
Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy is very concerned about the series of attacks carried out by Sudanese troops and Janjaweed militias against civilians living in refugee camps. The attacks began last week at Kalma, a camp located in southern Darfur and quickly spread to Zamzam, near north Darfur, Birmaza, and Bere. As a result of these attacks, losses were suffered including the abduction of three women and two children from Bere and four severely injured at Zamzam.
In addition to these incidents, there are other attacks occurring throughout Darfur although the outcomes are not yet confirmed. For example, the result of an attack on Habeela Kajengessy last weekend remains unknown. Unfortunately, the Sudanese government has made it almost impossible for reporters and informants to release information about these attacks to the outside world. The government of Sudan is taking advantage of the fact that the United States is engrossed with the Presidential election and not focusing attention on the events taking place in Darfur. The Sudanese government will utilize any opportunity to hide from the criticism and accusations by the international community. Currently, Ramadan, a holy month for Muslims, is taking place. As a result, Muslims do not expect attacks or disrespect from other Muslims. However, it is evident that the Sudanese government is not abiding by this understanding.
After the indictment of Al Bashir by the International Criminal Court (ICC) and prosecutor Luis Moreno- Ocampo on July 14, 2008, Al Bashir is increasing his attacks against innocent civilians to coerce the ICC to drop the indictment. His strategy has received support from other Arab leaders who are calling for the suspension of his indictment. Damanga is outraged by this news and would like to stress the foolish nature of Al Bashir for believing that these tactics will suspend his indictment. At this time, it is necessary for the ICC, UN Security Council, and international community to work together. It is imperative that the ICC enforce Al Bashir’s indictment, the UN Security Council implement Resolution 1769, and the international community support both. At this time, more peacekeepers are needed in Darfur to curtail the violence of Al Bashir’s campaign.
