Damanga Condemns the Killing of Peacekeepers
October 14, 2008
Damanga Coalition for Freedom and Democracy is outraged by the attacks against peacekeepers in the region. We strongly condemn this irresponsible behavior and the systematic attacks against aid workers, peacekeepers, and refugees needs to stop immediately. The only party benefitting from this violence is the Sudanese government and Arab militias who support Al-Bashir’s regime. It is very obvious that these tactics are used to dissuade the international community against further involvement in Darfur. As a result, the Sudanese government is benefitting by shooting down UN planes and helicopters. The government is carrying out these acts and then blaming these actions on the rebel forces; thus, the government is using the rebels as scapegoats, similar to the situation regarding the Kalma camp in August.
Damanga urges the international community to immediately deploy the full amount of peacekeepers to Darfur and provide them with the necessary amount of helicopters to stop the killings. We also strongly support the ICC to continue its efforts and arrest Al-Bashir and his ministers involved in this genocide as soon as possible. Additionally, as victims of the genocide in Darfur, we ask the African leaders that are pro-Al-Bashir to end their support and let justice occur. It is a disgrace that some countries continue to block the ICC as it tries to extend justice to Darfur.
