Darfuri refugees in Chad Still suffering
July 8, 2010
I just got some concerns from our Darfuri refugees in Chad today. Their concerns are the following:
1- The most threatening element to their lives in Chad camps now is the "security". They said: they don't feel save at all due to daily harassment by the Sudanese government" spies "as they explained, Janjaweed even in Chad and other different groups in different army uniforms that they couldn't identified them, but they all agreed on one thing that: Chadian authorities were incapable to help them secure their lives. The UN peace keepers there are unable to cover all the camps..so all the looters, along with SAF Sudanese Army Forces and Rebels of Chad can easily penetrate the camps on a daily basis. This situation is relevant to the agreement being reached between Chadian government and the Sudanese regime a few months ago. The result of this agreement seems to be affecting those refugees and IDP's in both Chad and Darfur very negatively.
2- Schools, No High Schools to receive the growing numbers of those graduated from 8th grades. No University to take those have high school diploma in Chad or inside Darfur Universities. They really need more Schools and at least one University to accept them without any restrictions.
3 They're also very concerned a bout the continued rape of their women when they go outskirt of the camps to gather fire wood and other wild materials around the camps. Many of armed groups out there attack the women in systematic campaigns of rape and humiliate them. No one is there to protect them at all.
4- They're concerned about the lack of food given by the UN, which Was not sufficient. They need more to satisfy their daily needs especially Kids. Also Medical treatment is still a real challenge for the refugees despite some organizations like MSF etc are working there only in limited areas.
So these are a summery of the complaints Damanga received from a few sources in Chad.
Let's work together to do what is possible to help them.
God bless you all.
