Letter to General Gration

Major General J. Scott Gration

Special Envoy Sudan

U.S. Department of State

2201 C Street NW

Washington , DC 20520

Dear General Gration:

We the undersigned activist leaders are writing to recommend the following actions by the U.S. Government in response to the ongoing conflicts in Sudan :

    * Provide firm and immediate deadlines to Omar al-Bashir’s regime in order to stop the climate of impunity and violence throughout Sudan . It is imperative that the U.S. Government outline specific steps and timelines that the NCP must meet or otherwise face heavy consequences, including but not limited to the imposition of targeted multilateral sanctions against its senior leaders.

The NCP’s shuttering of humanitarian operations in Darfur this March underscores the need for immediate deadlines: the people of Darfur should not have to wait any longer for humanitarian aid to be reinstated in full in Western Sudan . Forced starvation and disease are key tactical weapons in Khartoum ’s genocide and should be treated as such.

    * Take a proactive and holistic approach to securing peace in Sudan . Please focus on securing a peace agreement for Darfur; seeking full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the peace agreement in Eastern Sudan; and addressing rising tensions in Nubia , the Nuba Mountains , and other marginalized areas. We believe that these priorities can and must be dealt with simultaneously – a piecemeal approach that simply seeks to manage crisis after crisis is an inadequate approach.
    * Take every opportunity to hear from people that are affected directly by conflict in Sudan and whose understanding of the region from first-hand experience can inform and strengthen your efforts.

We sincerely appreciate the work you are doing to understand the complexities of Sudan and your engagement with other world leaders to intervene in Darfur .  Please let us know if we can be of any assistance to you or your office.
